We have struggled for equality. We have labored side-by-side.
We can feel the tide is turning, And one day, with your help,
Our dreams will no longer be denied.
-- “Come Share Our Pride” by Mark Hayes, (c) 2007
It’s a song we sing at nearly every concert. A stirring fanfare lets us proclaim, “We stand before you as men who love men.” Spontaneous cheers of pride and joy, recognition and encouragement erupt from the audiences. We’ve been told how good it makes you feel, how bold we are to sing it. Imagine the emotions involved in singing it. For one of our chorus members, the first time he sang it in concert was the first time he publicly acknowledged he is gay. He had difficulty finishing it. He now looks forward to it.
Maybe you can’t be part of a demonstration. Maybe you can’t carry a sign. Let us be your voice.
Maybe you’re just coming out and you heard us sing. Maybe we are another way for you to feel you’re all right and you’re not alone. You can make it possible for us to do that for others.
Maybe you’re utterly “post-gay.” Maybe all these gay-lesbian-bi-trans-whatever labels are just too annoying. Not everyone’s there… yet. Help us bring the rest of the community up-to-speed.
Maybe you’re a fan of men’s choruses, the powerful, intoxicating sound of men’s voices making music. We want to continue to feed your taste.
We are able to sing songs of affirmation because individual donations made it possible for us to buy the rights to sing songs like “Come Share Our Pride.” With your gift and others like it, we can continue to “sing out loud and sing out proud,” as another of our songs, “I'm Gonna Sing,” so powerfully puts it.
$50 buys a song. $100 buys an unpublished song like “Come Share Our Pride.” $1000 buys costumes for one of our concerts. $2500 buys a song commission. $10,000 buys a concert worth coming out for.
Mark Hayes eloquently wrote:
We celebrate the right to be who we really are,
Whether that’s a gentle soul or a bright and shining star.
We are a gift to the world, that cannot be denied.
Come join the celebration. Come share our pride.
With your gift and others like it, imagine the possibilities. See you at the concerts!
